Fresh white summer flowers

I'm LOVING white flowers.....peonies, dahlias, clematis, astilbe, arabicum, tulips. I designed this fresh and summery arrangement for a party tomorrow.

We've moved!

It's official......we've moved to 1110 Davis Street, and I absolutely LOVE the new space. We're directly across the street from the main Evanston post office, and we have tons of natural light with a big front window, a wide street in front (with lots of traffic), a busy walking traffic neighborhood (particularly down the block from the Davis Street Metra and CTA station), and, it's just wonderful.

I'm pleased to see both long time ('old') customers in the shop as well as new customers newly discovering us! And, our phones are as busy as always.

The shop has an airy feel with the very high ceilings, and the new storage area (full basement!) is wonderful. We look forward to being re-discovered, and discovered anew.

We will be directly across the street from the Evanston main post office!

Icelandic volcanic ash - and flowers!

We've heard all the news reports about travelers unable to return home because of the flight cancellations in Europe, but what about the flowers?!?! Those of us who buy flowers flown from Holland are currently unable to receive them! Yes, this may not be the most significant impact from the falling ash, but it's an example of how interconnected we are with countries all over the world.

"Volcano Illustrates World's Interconnectedness" by The Associated Press
CHICAGO April 16, 2010, 07:05 pm ET A volcano erupts in Iceland, and the effects ripple around the globe: A mom in Romania frets about making her son's wedding in Texas. A florist in New York worries shipments won't arrive. ....The fallout from the ash cloud looming over Europe illustrates just how interconnected our world has become. "

Here's the Bloomberg report:
Flowers, Fruit Start to Run Short as Volcano Disruption Spreads:

Volcanic ash also impacts Kenya flower growers who ship to Holland auction:

Meanwhile, I await the latest report from my wholesalers, hoping that I'll soon be able to be well stocked again with all my lovely Dutch flowers!

Spring blooming branches

The sure sign of spring is when FlowersFlowers has blooming branches! There may be snow outdoors, but you can have spring inside - even in March.

Blooming branches include quince, forsythia, prunus, plum, cherry. Now is the time, and it's not a long season. Blooming branches look great just in a vase, simple, without any other flowers, or make a great addition to a more intricate floral arrangement.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Are you familiar with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? As the first hints of spring appear here in Chicago, I look forward to when we are able to get organically and locally grown fruits and vegetables. A great way to support your local farmer and eat seasonally is by participating in a CSA. Here's more info:
http://www.localharvest.org/csa/

I have chosen, again, to participate with Tomato Mountain Farm, a 12 acre certified organic farm in Brooklyn, Wisconsin (near Madison). Farmer Chris Covelli takes great pride in his produce, and the result is the best tasting berries, tomatoes, greens, carrots, shallots, onions, potatoes, and much more! Find out more about Tomato Mountain at http://www.tomatomountain.com/ It's not too soon to sign up, and he offers early sign up discounts!

And, in addition to enjoying the fruits and vegetables from Tomato Mountain Farm, FlowersFlowers will be one of the pick up sites!
